What is Test Sieve
Recertification/Calibration?

Test Sieve calibration or Recertification is the process of checking a working sieve’s performance using different levels of certification. A working sieve is a sieve that has already been used in the particle analysis process.

Why is it important to Calibrate/Recertify a working sieve?

After being used for a period of time, test sieves will suffer wear and tear. This means that the sieves may not be producing the same level of accuracy in results as it was upon receiving or purchasing the sieve. It is imperative that test sieves be re-certified or calibrated on a specific schedule to ensure they still comply with intended specifications.

W.S. Tyler Recertification includes

A visual inspection upon receiving sieve

An examination using our automatic, non-contact, dimensional measurement system

Cleaning of the test sieve (additional cost)

Both of the following Certification grades are available for the recertification process and are traceable to International Standards.

W.S. Tyler’s laboratory examinations are performed with an automatic, non-contact, dimensional measurement system with an accuracy of +/- one-tenth of a micron. W.S. Tyler, on average, performs 10,000 examinations per year in our on-site working laboratories.

Level 1

Inspection Grade Test Sieve Certification

Sieves have a specified number of openings measures in each sieve after the sieve cloth is mounted in the frame to a confidence level of 99%.

+

Sieves are analyzed to meet ASTM and ISO Standards, Serialized and are traceable to an International Standard.

Level 2

Calibration Grade Test Sieve Certification

Sieves have about double the amount of openings measures as in the Inspection Grade Certification after the sieve cloth is mounted in the frame. This higher number of measurements increases the confidence level to 99.73%.

Sieves are analyzed to meet ASTM and ISO Standards, serialized and are traceable to International Standards.

What condition does my sieve need to be in to have it recertified?

  1. The mesh on the sieve cannot be torn or wavy
  2. The wires on the mesh cannot be out of spec (soiled sieve)

What should I do before sending in my test sieve for Recertification/Calibration?

W.S. Tyler requires the following items be included in the packaging for each of your test sieve recertification orders:

  1. RMA Number Must be clearly written on the box
(Can be obtained through customer service department)
  2. Purchase Order – copy included in the box
  3. SDS documentation for the material that has been tested on the test sieves
  4. Test Sieves must be clean and free of debris when received.

What happens if my sieve fails the recertification process?

Test sieves can fail for many reasons, but the one reason that can affect your business the most is change in aperture that can occur with use. If your sieve fails recertification, W.S. Tyler will contact you with the results and give you the chance to purchase a new sieve with certification by providing you with a formal quote.

How often should I Recertify/Calibrate my test sieve?

There are a number of factors that can impact the suggested schedule of Test Sieve Recertification. We recommend the following schedule when it comes to re-certifying in-use test sieves. This can be adjusted based on the abrasiveness of the material you are sieving.

Aperture Schedule*
5 in. - 1/4 in. 80 uses or 36 months
US # 3-½ to US # 12 70 uses or 30 months
US # 14 - US # 40 60 uses or 24 months
US # 45 - US # 140 50 uses or 18 months
US # 170 - US # 325 40 uses or 12 months
US # 400 - US # 635 20 uses or 6 months
*Whichever comes last.
